Little Soul
01:27
|
|||
Why does trouble always find me?
Through these canyons that I’ve climbed
From the life I thought I’d left behind
You tried to find a single reason
To stay another season
I gave you nothing to believe in
But I’m here
Still dragging this little soul around

I'm Not Myself Today
02:53
|
|||
Please excuse my playing the blues
I’m not myself today
This morning a beast in my bed sang my refrain
It ate my meals, wore my clothes, and answered to my name
It told me “You’ve been dying since the day of your birth, don’t waste a lifetime living to work. Besides, being brave means sometimes you must misbehave.”
Please excuse my playing the blues
I’m not myself today
I’m a melancholy mess, exposed as though I’m dressed in cellophane
I lost a gamble for my soul to a devil- he’s a glutton for my shame
He said “you might feel haunted by your harrowing climb, don’t fret, the best of cowboys all lose heart sometimes. Follow your own reason and rhyme, be defiant and you will be just fine.”
Oh why does it please you to tease me?
Oh why won’t you let sleeping dogs lie?
Why do you try and keep me down?
I’m climbing out from under your thumb and into the sun and I’m free
Just like a little bird should be
Love me- or leave me my liberty
Please excuse my playing the blues
I’m not myself today

Huckleberry Love
04:02
|
|||
Lay your head down now honey-pie
I’ve sailed the storms in your eyes before, I’ve quelled their taciturn tides
Won’t you let me be your right hand man?
I could write the songs for your one man band
As long as you’ve been trying
You will find no man is an island
And if you’re looking to define my courage to hold the line
Waiting for a sign to be sure of
Look no further, I’m your Huckleberry Love
You stole me with your silver tongue; you held me hostage from the start
For years I tried to pierce the callouses that concealed your perfect tender heart
If you’ve never known the love of a contrary man
How could you begin to judge or even ever try to understand?
As long as it's discontent you feed
You'll starve the joy your spirit needs
And if you taste it you will find the sweetest fruit beyond the rind
Not every bite you take from life is gonna draw blood
Look no further, I’m your Huckleberry Love
There was time we were so young once
If we try can we find some common ground to build a life on
I won’t go breaking your spirit now

Grace, Love & Charity
03:46
|
|||
Another year riding the train towards the ones I love who share my name
I’ll rest these bones in my old bed again
A frost web on the window pane sidewalks whitewashed in winter’s stain
I’m embraced by the frigid wind like a long lost friend
Oh I feel a change coming over me
I’m staying gold
Singing sweet and low
Of grace love and charity
Just as I’m sure I won’t endure another step in this frozen storm
You’re there on the warm side of the door
Mama my straight job’s killing me, but the hustle couldn’t feed my needs
The confessions helps wipe my spirit clean
Oh I feel a change coming over me
Oh I’m staying gold singing sweet and low
Of grace love and charity
For all the loves I had and lost- I hope you’re with your sweetheart somewhere
The nights you guest star in my dreams you’re as young and handsome as you were way back then
From the comfort of my window seat
I watch the snow fall to meet It’s fate when it kisses the concrete
I see it dance dissolve and die like a whisper in the wind
It’s then I realize I can begin again
Oh I feel a change coming over me
I’m staying gold singing sweet and low
Of grace love and charity

The Alabaster Girl
04:28
|
|||
He is a master crafter
A carver of alabaster
Married to his art
He buried his heart long ago
Where it grew cold and hard as stone
But his loneliness persists
And he’s sure the cure to this
Is his very own Venus de Milo
Perfection set in stone; he would cast her
So he carved himself a girl from alabaster
Nights and days whittled away
He barely slept, he scarcely ate
Until one day they stood face to face
She was so lovely
As smooth as milk and honey
She was plucked from his dreams all a goddess ever could be
Soon she became his alter, he was praying to her sculpture
“Oh lord give her life so that I may adore her”
He could almost hear the soft sound of her laughter
Oh he carved himself a girl from alabaster
He laid a fevered cheek upon her breast
Pleading with the gods to turn her stone to flesh
And just when he couldn’t feel any more desperate
He felt the rise and fall of her chest
She’s in his arms now
in a warm embrace but somehow
There lies an ache, a missing a piece- she’s an empty shell
A perfect form with an angel’s face
but born from dust she hasn’t learned to love him so well
She’s a living masterpiece, his miracle disaster
He carved himself a girl from alabaster

Dear Moon Child
04:34
|
|||
She's the strawberry queen of the Carolina's
Bend down and kiss the Ruby rings around the fingers of her royal highness
And she's wild like a wolf marauding the moors in the fog she'll stalk and prowl
Dear Moon Child Tilt your head back and howl
There will be days that feel so far away from where you are now
Plant your flag atop the mountain you conquered somehow
Beneath a rush of river flows the secrets you won't speak
Still waters run deep
She was born to be adored, adorned in dancing shoes and untamed curls
If the world is an oyster, then dear Lucia you're the pearl
There will be days that feel so far away from where you are now
Plant your flag atop the mountain you conquered somehow
Beneath a rush of river flows the secrets you won't speak
Still waters run deep
Strangers stop and stare, their burning gaze hard to ignore
But oh, my momma told me not to mind them; they've just never seen a movie star before
There will be days that feel so far away from where you are now
Plant your flag atop the mountain you conquered somehow
Beneath a rush of river flows the secrets you won't speak
Still waters run deep

La Grande Fame
03:26
|
|||
Oh me oh my oh- what a way to go
Swallowed by the avalanche I created with an echo
as a condition of my ambition
there's no end in sight- no bottom to my strife
to a hunger so great, it's eating me alive
I sought the wisdom of the prophets, poets and the saints
to help me solve the puzzle of the moth caught in between my screen and window pane
with a web weaving it's fate waiting on either side
and a hunger so great, it's eating me alive
you've got ashes in danger of falling over the edge of your cigarette
stories to unfold and be told but you don't want to waste your breath
Oh me oh my- what a way to die
I want a life to live, but I don't want to live a lie
My lips in it's grip, a lump in my lungs, my hands and tongue are tied
to this hunger so great, it's eating me alive

Amends
04:06
|
|||
One day- I'll contain the wind
I'll hold the flame in my fist without scorching the skin
I refuse to believe it's too late for me
It's not too late baby now it's not too late
Goodness, graceless little me
I praise and hail the days I find peace
Time- old friend
Make amends
Time- Old Friend
If you dig around my dark past, you'll mine more coal than diamonds
But they're insignificant as a pinprick on the bright vast horizon
Oh I'm the greater fool for betting my best hand on fate
But it's not too late for me baby now not too late
Goodness, graceless little me
I praise and hail the days I find peace
Time- old friend
Make amends
Time- Old Friend
If I lose my nerve
Will it be the death of me?
If I dare to speak the words
Will I find relief?
Goodness, graceless little me, little me
Time- old friend
Make amends
Time- Old Friend

If We Don't Die Young
03:48
|
|||
When did we get so many paces ahead of our old selves?
Fashions changed, furniture rearranged, we're strangers in the photo frames lining the shelves.
If you stay, babe, I'll put the kettle on
Curl up with a cup of halcyon
I savor time these sacred days
I'm not just giving this shit away
We can seize the sun
The day is ours to run
If we don't die young
Your reflection hasn't changed to show your age; every season you stay evergreen
While time has flown and shown the worst of me- it's my curse to feel everything
I hear the hush of a settled score
Feel the gust of the shutting door
We can seize the sun
The day is ours to run
If we don't die young
Don't glance behind you- time is on your heels
You'll forget the details but not how you feel
We can seize the sun
The day is ours to run
If we don't die young
When did we get so many paces ahead of our old selves?
